POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Accounting Specialist is responsible for assisting the Manager, Accounting with assigned duties across the entire accounting department and operations of the company. This position is responsible for maintenance of the general ledger, posting transactions, reconciling accounts, preparation of supporting schedules, general maintenance of accounting records and budgets, and maintain financial controls designed to mitigate risk and ensure accuracy of the company’s financial information, and compliance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
The Accounting Specialist will also be responsible for assisting the Manager, Accounting with the preparation of operational analysis, cost accounting, forecasting, budgetary monitoring, controls, and decision support as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Accurate recording of financial transactions.
- Collect required tax and banking information to set up and maintain active vendors.
- Identify vendors subject to U.S. tax reporting requirements.
- Validate vendor information by performing background checks or confirmation of vendor changes.
- Participate in the evaluation, selection, and performance monitoring of vendors.
- Maintain current insurance information for contractors.
- Track capital expenditures and fixed asset inventory.
- Capitalize purchased or completed assets when placed in service.
- Maintain detailed fixed asset ledger and reconcile to periodic physical asset inventory.
- Prepare and record monthly depreciation journal entries.
- Reconcile vendor statements, research and correct discrepancies.
- Work with other departments on projects that involve accounting and/or financial analysis.
- Assist with other Finance Department duties during absences.
- Assist with preparation of tax reporting to governmental agencies including:
- Sales and use tax
- IRS annual informational filings for vendors (1099’s).
- Property tax rendition statements and exemption listings.
- Assist with preparation of company financial information including cost reports, budgetary analysis, forecasts, and annual financial statements.
- Reconcile inventory ledger with physical inventory counts.
- Prepare first level reconciliation of general ledger accounts.
- Serve as backup to the Payroll Manager, providing support and coverage for all payroll processing activities during absences or peak periods.
- Participate in mine site safety program and complete required annual trainings, follow safety procedures, promote safe behavior, and attend site safety meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Finance required.
- Minimum 2 years of accounting experience in a manufacturing or mining environment desirable.
- Certified Public Accountant or other relevant certification optional.
- Strong analytical skills, along with a firm grasp of accounting and business concepts required.
- Technical skills obtained through detailed accounting and/or familiarity with ERP software including common accounting modules required.
- Ability to use basic computer word processing, spreadsheet and database programs including Microsoft Office Suite and advanced proficiency in Excel required.
- Experience with QuickBooks, Outlook, Adobe, Microsoft Windows, and asset management software preferred.
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and general algebra to perform financial calculations such as depreciation, breakeven analysis, net present value, return on investment analysis, and auditing work required.
- Ability to work within a team environment and possess excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills required.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to be insured by the company required.
- Ability to work productively with minimal supervision and communicate effectively with supervisor and co-workers required.
- The ability to follow the company’s industrial safety and radiation safety policies and procedures is required.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and sit; walk. The employee must be able to lift 25 pounds repeatedly. The position is administrative with minimal on-site field time.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to hazards typically associated with a uranium ISR facility including low to moderate noises levels, moving equipment, wet surfaces, uneven ground and facility equipment. The work is generally indoors.
